A Newbury school has led the tributes to a former teacher, described as “a true legend”, who died this month. John King, whose father was the curate of St John’s Church during World War II, lived his whole life in the Newbury house where he grew up. He returned to the town after finishing his degree at university in Manchester and became a sixth form history master at the then St Bartholomew’s Grammar School on September 1, 1964.
