Victims of the Whakaari White Island eruption and their families have been awarded more than $10 million New Zealand dollars ($6 million US) in reparations, a judge ruled on Friday. There were 47 people sightseeing on the privately owned island when the volcano erupted in December 2019. Twenty-two people were killed and a further 25 were injured. In the Auckland District Court, Judge Evangelos Thomas sentenced five companies that took tourists to the island before the fatal eruption.
