Qualcomm chipsets power most Android phones available in the US, with the exception of a few that are equipped with Samsung’s Exynos chip. On the other hand, many smartphone brands offer MediaTek-based smartphones at different price points. The landscape of Android phones in the US is about to change, as MediaTek confirmed during its Analyst Day event that a MediaTek-powered phone will debut in the US this year. What is particularly noteworthy is that it will not be an entry-level or mid-range phone; instead, it will be a high-end device.
MediaTek premium phone in development for the US
As you can see above, the MediaTek-powered premium smartphone will be released later this year in the US. Unfortunately, the chipmaker did not reveal anything else about the device. Therefore, it remains uncertain which brand’s phone based on MediaTek will be introduced in the US in 2024.
The latest flagship chip from MediaTek is the Dimensity 9300, which debuted last year in November. Vivo X100 and X100 Pro were the first phones to feature it. The Taiwanese chipmaker will announce the Dimensity 9300 Plus, an overclocked version of the D9300, on May 7 in China. The Vivo X100s and X100s Pro are expected to be the first phones to receive it.
It is expected that MediaTek will also announce the Dimensity 9400 chip in October this year. This may be a 3nm chip with the next generation ARM Cortex-X5 processor core. Most likely, the new chip will appear in the Vivo X200 series. This chip will also be used in Oppo’s upcoming flagship phone, which looks like it will be the Oppo Find X8. It is not yet known whether any of these devices will be released in the US market this year.
