MediaTek has released Dimensity 9300+, a new chipset designed for flagship smartphones. Despite a modest specification upgrade over the Dimensity 9300, the new chip focuses on improved on-device AI processing and broader support for large language models (LLMs).

The chip is compatible with various LLMs, including Google’s Gemini Nano and Meta’s Llama 2 and 3. MediaTek claims that this broad LLM compatibility, combined with its on-device LoRA (Low-Rank Approximation) fusion technology, will foster a rich ecosystem of generative AI applications.

In fact, the Dimensity 9300+ is the first processor in the industry to achieve high-speed performance for specific LLMs. MediaTek claims a speed of 22 tokens/sec for Meta’s Llama 2 7B model.

In addition to AI, Dimensity 9300+ promises improved energy efficiency. It reportedly reduces power consumption by 20% in certain gaming scenarios. The chipset also integrates “star speed” to optimize network connectivity and supports dual network parallelism.

Technical characteristics

Built on a 4nm process technology, the Dimensity 9300+ contains an octa-core processor with one high-performance Arm Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.4 GHz, three additional Cortex-X4 cores clocked at 2.85 GHz, and four Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz.

The chipset is equipped with MediaTek’s new NeuroPilot technology to improve artificial intelligence processing. The APU 790 AI engine allows running LLMs with different parameter sizes – from 1 to 33 billion. Notably, it has twice the speed of competing solutions for LLMs with 7 billion parameters.

For gamers, the Dimensity 9300+ integrates a second-generation hardware ray tracing engine with the Arm Immortalis-G720 GPU.

The chipset also includes MediaTek’s Imagiq 990 ISP for enhanced camera capabilities and MiraVision 990 for improved visual content processing.

In terms of connectivity, the Dimensity 9300+ boasts a 5G R16 modem with support for Sub-6 GHz networks and downlink speeds of up to 7 Gbps.

Availability

Vivo X100S will be the first device to use Dimensity 9300+. In addition, the upcoming iQOO Neo9S Pro, which is scheduled for release this month, will also be equipped with the new chipset.
