German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned the shooting of Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico. “I am deeply shocked by the news of the cowardly attack on Slovakian Prime Minister Fico,” Scholz wrote on X. “Violence must not be existant in European politics. In these hours, my thoughts are with Robert Fico, his family and the citizens of Slovakia.” Fico was shot and injured after a Cabinet meeting in the town of Handlová earlier on Wednesday. He was taken to hospital, the Slovakian news agency TASR reported, citing the deputy leader of Fico’s left-wing nationalist Smer party, Ľuboš Blaha.
