Emergency repairs were underway to fix a “pavement heave” on the southbound side of Garden State Parkway that has caused multi-mile delays in Ocean County, officials said. A pavement heave is a ripple or crack in the asphalt that can be caused by moisture under the pavement that is subjected to high temperatures. The asphalt can be compromised when the heat causes the water underneath it to turn into steam. Officials did not respond to questions Tuesday about the size of the heave, or how it formed.
