Team orders have existed in Formula 1 since the start of the championship in the 1950s. Back then it was a case of a driver swapping their car with a teammate because of a mechanical problem and enabling them to win a race, just as Luigi Musso was told by Ferrari to hand his car over to Juan Manuel Fangio at the 1956 Italian Grand Prix.
