Hungary ended a 52-year gold medal drought in Olympic men’s épée team event fencing with a dramatic 26-25 overtime triumph over Tokyo 2020 champions Japan on Friday at the Paris Games. Gergely Siklosi got the deciding point against Koki Kano who had tied the final in a comeback from 20-18 down before falling just short. Hungary had won the event three straight times 1964, 1968 and 1972 but had not tasted success since then. The Czech Republic earlier beat hosts France 43-41 in the bronze medal match, leaving the record nine-time winners without a medal like in Tokyo.
