Police in Cambridge have had reports of mobile phone thieves targeting al fresco diners and cafe customers using a distraction technique. The con artists approach their intended victim while they are sitting at a table outside. They might ask for money, directions or simply strike up a conversation, then use a piece of paper or a menu to cover a phone on the table. The phone will then be removed underneath the paper while the thief is still distracting the victim.
