Tourists on the Greek island of Crete had to be evacuated from their hotels on Wednesday due to a fire. The fire brigade said fire-fighting helicopters are in action to bring the flames under control near the popular holiday resort of Platanias, west of Chania. Local radio station ERT-Chania reported that thick smoke forced hotels to evacuate as a precaution, with videos emerging of tourists leaving for safety. Authorities are investigating the causes of the fire. The risk of further blazes is likely to continue across Greece until the end of October, despite heavy rainfall in some areas.
