Throughout the year, Kyivstar has been testing the reallocation of 2100 MHz spectrum throughout Ukraine. These frequencies were previously used for 3G and are now being reconfigured for 4G. As part of this project, outdated 3G technology is temporarily unavailable. Such tests have already been carried out in 17 cities of Ukraine and yielded unexpected results – a significant increase in 4G speed.

Due to the fact that the radio frequency was not loaded with slow 3G, according to Kyivstar’s internal indicators, the speed of 4G mobile Internet increased by 62% on average. For example, 4G speeds in Sumy increased by 63%, in Kolomyia by 42%, in Lutsk by 46%, and in Nizhyn by 64%.

This multi-year project is of great importance for the entire electronic communications industry, as it not only improves customer experience but also prepares the network for the launch of 5G technology in Ukraine. And this can be realized, among other things, by freeing up frequencies from outdated technologies such as 3G.

The trend of reusing 3G frequencies in favor of 4G has long been observed around the world. In particular, 56% of European mobile operators have already abandoned 3G, and another 42% will do so by 2025.

Kyivstar is currently in the process of testing and communicating with subscribers about the transition to 4G. Currently, such subscribers account for about 6% of the total customer base. Therefore, the company urges subscribers who have not yet switched to 4G technology to enable it on their phones. Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found here.

The company plans to complete the testing by the end of next year. This should improve the quality of 4G internet for Kyivstar customers across the country.
