With phones becoming increasingly important for storing sensitive data such as payment information and personal details, losing your phone can be a frustrating experience. That’s why the Google team has developed and thoroughly tested in beta a full suite of features designed to protect you and your data at every stage – before, during, and after your device is stolen.
These advanced anti-theft features are now available to users worldwide via the Android 15 update and Google Play (on devices running Android 10 and above).

AI-powered anti-theft features to protect against theft

The Theft Detection Lock uses powerful artificial intelligence to proactively protect you in the event of a theft attempt. Using machine learning on the device, Theft Detection Lock is able to analyze various device signals to detect potential theft attempts. If the algorithm detects a potential theft attempt, it locks the phone’s screen to prevent thieves from entering.

To protect your sensitive data in case your phone is stolen, Theft Detection Lock uses the device’s sensors to detect theft attempts. We are working hard to make this feature available to as many devices as possible.

This feature will be rolled out gradually to ensure compatibility across devices, and will now be available on Android devices, which cover 90% of active users worldwide. Please check your anti-theft settings page periodically to see if your device currently supports the feature.

In addition to Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock protects you if a thief tries to disconnect your device from the network to extract data or avoid remote wiping via Android’s Find My Device feature. If an unlocked device is left offline for an extended period of time, this feature locks the screen so that your phone cannot be used by thieves.

Remote lock

If your Android device does get lost or stolen, Remote Lock can quickly help you secure it.

Even if you can’t remember your Google credentials at the time of the theft, you can use any device to visit Android.com/lock and lock your phone using only a verified phone number.

Remote locking protects your device while you regain access through Android’s Find My Device feature, allowing you to secure, locate, or remotely wipe your device. For security reasons, we always recommend that you keep your device backed up at all times so that remote wiping is not an issue.

These features are now available on most devices running Android 10 and above via a Google Play Services update and should be enabled in the settings.

Advanced protection to stop theft before it happens

Android 15 introduces new security features to prevent theft before it happens, making it harder for thieves to access sensitive settings, apps, or reset your device for resale:

  • Changes to sensitive settings such as “Find My Device” now require a PIN, password, or biometric authentication.

  • Multiple failed login attempts, which may indicate that a thief is trying to guess your password, will result in your device being locked, preventing unauthorized access.

  • And enhanced factory reset protection makes it even harder for thieves to reset your device without your Google account credentials, which significantly reduces its resale value and protects your data.

Later this year, we’ll be launching Identity Check, an optional feature that adds an extra layer of protection by requiring biometric authentication when accessing critical Google account and device settings, such as changing your PIN, turning off theft protection, or accessing Passkeys from an untrusted location. This helps prevent unauthorized access even if your device’s PIN is compromised.

Real protection for billions of Android users

Google integrates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and biometric authentication to give you more peace of mind. These anti-theft features are just one example of how Android is working to provide real protection for everyone.
