Firefighters have finally left the scene of a blaze at a recycling site almost 24 hours after it started. Eight fire engines were at Chatham Docks at the height of the incident which led to residents on nearby St Mary’s Island being told to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke. The advice was lifted after operations were completed shortly before 7pm today. However, crews will continue to revisit the site to ensure all hotspots are dampened down.
