The German cabinet on Wednesday approved a draft for the nation’s first federal sports funding law. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, whose portfolio includes sport, presented the draft which much pass through Germany’s two houses of parliament. The ministry said the legislation will put the funding of elite sport on a standardised and transparent legal basis for the first time. The law is to make planning easier, reduce bureaucracy and ultimately improve the performance of athletes. The centrepiece is an independent sports agency which is to distribute the funds.
