Baidu, often referred to as China’s answer to Google, has unveiled its own pair of artificial intelligence smart glasses at its annual World Conference in Shanghai. The device will be powered by the company’s ERNIE generative artificial intelligence technology and has been designed to “become a personal assistant,” according to the Financial Times. Reportedly, users will be able to interact with the device using their voice and ask it questions about what they see in their current environment. They can also ask the device to play music and even track their calorie intake. And since the glasses are equipped with cameras, they can ask them to take pictures or shoot videos.
When the glasses start selling next year, they could be an alternative to Meta and Snap devices for Chinese consumers. A few years ago, Meta teamed up with Ray Ban to launch a pair of smart sunglasses that can stream live and send photos hands-free. The latest model of glasses has a built-in generative assistant with artificial intelligence that users can talk to. However, the company’s device is not officially sold in China as its servers are blocked in the country. Baidu has not yet announced how much its glasses will cost, but Meta sells its device for $299.
At Baidu’s Worldwide Conference, a lot of attention was paid to the company’s AI efforts as it takes steps to make sure ERNIE can keep up with its competitors’ technology. The company has also launched a new AI image generator called iRAG, which apparently has fewer hallucinations than its predecessor, as well as a tool that allows people to create software even if they have no coding experience. According to The Times, ByteDance’s Doubao is now the leading AI chatbot in China in terms of monthly active users, according to Sensor Tower. ByteDance is also expanding its hardware offerings and recently released a pair of headphones with access to its Doubao AI assistant.
