By Graeme Murray A major explosion could see “fountains of diamonds” erupt from the Earth’s crust during a geological event. Research by Thomas Gernon, a professor of Earth and climate science at the University of Southampton, suggests supercontinents could split and send diamonds flying form the centre of the Earth. The precious stones form 150 kilometres below our feet, but the professor predicts they will be sent skywards by ‘kimberlite’ eruptions at 133 kilometres an hour sparking enormous explosions on the planet’s surface according the the study which is published in the journal Nature. …
