But over the Channel, consumption of frogs’ legs – usually sautéed with garlic and lemon juice or fried in breadcrumbs – peaks during the festive season. Around 100 million frogs are killed each year just to supply the French market, the largest consumer. But millions more are killed for eating in Belgium and the Netherlands, where the dish is also popular.
