Twice world champion Barbara Matić from Croatia lived up to her billing as Olympic favourite by taking gold in the women’s 70 kilogram judo on Wednesday. Matic dominated the final against Miriam Butkereit, who was happy with silver as the Germans picked up their first judo medal in Paris after a disappointing few days. In the men’s 90kg final, Lasha Bekauri picked up Georgia’s first gold in Paris when he repeated his Tokyo success by beating Japan’s Sanshiro Murao. The Japanese judoka led with waza-ari but the Georgian produced ippon just in time to triumph.
