Google is preparing to announce the Pixel 9 series of smartphones on August 13. Rumors have already leaked many details about the upcoming Pixel 9 series and the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold phone. Surprisingly, the rumors haven’t revealed much about the Tensor G4 that will power the next generation of Pixel phones. A new report from Android Authority reveals that the Tensor G4 won’t be a significant upgrade over the Tensor G3.

Tenso G4 details

According to the report, the Tensor G4 will have a 4+3+1 layout consisting of newer ARMv9.2 cores: Cortex-A520, Cortex-A720, and Cortex-X4. These cores have a slightly higher clock speed than the G3, which includes four Cortex-A510 cores, four Cortex-A715 cores, and one Cortex-X3 core.

Preliminary Geekbench results indicate approximately 11% performance improvement in single-core mode and 3% improvement in multi-core mode, although these results should be viewed with caution until more data is available.

The Tensor G4 will be equipped with the new Exynos Modem 5400, which provides satellite connectivity support and efficiency improvements, reportedly offering up to 50% better power consumption than the Exynos Modem 5300 used in the Pixel 8. The GPU in the Tensor G4 remains the same Mali-G715 as in the Tensor G3, although it has a higher clock speed of 940 MHz compared to 890 MHz.

The full CPU and GPU specifications for the Tensor G4 are as follows:

  • CPU (small cluster): 4x Cortex-A520 @ 1.95 GHz
  • CPU (middle cluster): 3x Cortex-A720 @ 2.6 GHz
  • CPU (large cluster): 1x Cortex-X4 @ 3.1 GHz
  • GPU: Mali-G715 (unknown number of cores) @ 940 MHz

Despite these hardware upgrades, many of the custom IP blocks that define Tensor chips, such as Edge TPU, GXP, BigWave, and the Titan M2 security chip, remain unchanged. The packaging technology for Tensor G4 is still identified as FOPLP.

Initially, Tensor G4 was supposed to be a completely different chip built independently of Samsung, codenamed “redondo,” but delays led to the decision to work with Samsung again. Thus, the Tensor G4 (“zumapro”) represents a minimal upgrade over the Tensor G3 (“zuma”). To summarize, while the Tensor G4 may not be a big step forward, it does bring some improvements, such as a new modem, providing some advantages over its predecessor.
