Kate Douglass of the United States claimed her first gold medal at the Paris Games with a win in the women’s 200-metre breaststroke. Douglass, who already had 4x100m freestyle silver, clocked 2 minutes 19.24 for a new American record after a tight fight with silver medallist Tatjana Smith, formerly Schoenmaker, of South Africa (+0.36s). Bronze went to world champion Tes Schouten of the Netherlands.
