Samsung is about to release its sixth generation of foldable smartphones. However, the company’s patent application hints that they are already working on making future foldable and roll-up smartphones stand out from the competition.

The patent application relates to a display technology the company is working on that will allow users to unlock their phone by touching anywhere on the screen, rather than a specific area of the screen. The abstract of the application states that the display will have “a fingerprint recognition sensor layer below the display panel.”

The technology is aimed at “integrating a fingerprint recognition sensor into the display panel, which is the component that occupies the largest area in a portable information and communication device,” the patent application says.

The company thus aims to develop a display that can implement a fingerprint recognition sensor without a separate external light source. This will reportedly also provide improved fingerprint recognition performance. In the attached image, the thickness of layers and areas may be exaggerated for clarity.

Currently, expensive, sophisticated smartphones are equipped with side-mounted fingerprint sensors. However, in the near future, they may be replaced by a full-screen fingerprint scanner under the display. @xleaks7 also believes that the new technology could be used in Samsung’s upcoming foldable smartphones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, as well as in foldable devices. The patent also shows that the first and second bases can be flexible.

Many people are frustrated by the sideways location of the sensor on a foldable device that costs almost $2000. This is also a problem that the new development will be able to solve.

Reportedly, reducing the thickness of the phone is one of the reasons for using a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on a foldable device. Let’s see if Samsung can solve this problem by integrating the fingerprint recognition system into the display panel.
