Share buybacks, sometimes referred to as share repurchases, are a type of financial engineering whereby a firm purchases back its own shares from the market. Buybacks, sometimes seen as a tactic to improve shareholder value, might artificially boost earnings per share by lowering the number of outstanding shares, thereby possibly driving higher stock prices.
