Hungary’s Hubert Kós had an incredible recovery in the final metres of the men’s 200-metre backstroke to take his nation’s first gold medal at the Paris Games. Greece’s Apostolos Christou was on course to win, but Kós found some extra energy late in the race to take the lead and finish it in 1 minute 54.26 seconds. Christou finished 0.56 behind and took silver, Greece’s best result in Paris so far, while bronze went to Roman Mityukov of Switzerland. German medal hope Lukas Märtens, who claimed 400m freestyle gold, finished last.
