McEvoy clocked 21.25 seconds, beating 2021 world champion Benjamin Proud of Britain by 0.05s. London 2012 champion Florent Manaudou took bronze for hosts France. Tokyo 2020 champion Caeleb Dressel was only sixth. Jordan Crooks of the Cayman Islands gave his nation hopes of a first-ever Olympic medal after finishing fourth in the semi-finals, but was only last in the final.
