The death toll from strong earthquakes on the west coast of Japan rose to at least 62 people, Japanese media reported on Wednesday. They were killed in the hard-hit prefecture of Ishikawa, the television station NHK reported. In towns such as Wajima, Suzu and Noto on the Noto peninsula, numerous houses collapsed or were destroyed by fires. Debris, mudslides and torn up roads were still hampering the search for survivors.
