Researchers say they have uncovered the skull of Australia’s own “giant and charismatic megafauna bird” that went extinct tens of thousands of years ago. Scientists from Adelaide’s Flinders University said the fossils were found in 2019 in the beds of Lake Callabonna, a remote region some 600 kilometres north of Adelaide. The skull allowed the researchers to show what the megabird species known as Genyornis newtoni looked like, researchers said.
