The youngest child and only daughter of New Zealand’s Māori king was announced as the new monarch on Thursday. Māori king Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero died on August 30, just days after celebrating the 18th anniversary of his coronation. His daughter was announced as the new monarch by Tekau-maa-rua, the Kiingitanga council, made up of 12 representatives.
