Attorney Alan Dershowitz said Wednesday that the United States could wind up in “Banana Republic Land” if New York Judge Juan Merchan sentences former President Donald Trump before the 2024 election. Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records, and is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 18. Dershowitz said that Merchan risks influencing the election on the basis of an “invalid verdict,” saying that the sentencing would be akin to what was going on in Venezuela, where dictator Nicolas Maduro is trying to imprison political opponents after a disputed election.
