After eight years in prison for corruption, Guatemala’s former president Otto Pérez is free again. He was released from prison on bail of the equivalent of $1.31 million, his lawyer, César Calderón, announced on Thursday. Pérez had resigned in 2015 as a result of a corruption scandal in the customs sector and was subsequently arrested. The 73-year-old former general was sentenced to 16 and eight years in prison in two trials. He appealed against the 16-year sentence.
