Telegram has quietly removed from its FAQ page the words that private chats are protected from moderation requests. This was reported by The Verge.

Consequences of Durov’s arrest

This change comes almost two weeks after the company’s CEO Pavel Durov was arrested in France. However, on August 29, Durov was released on bail of 5 million euros. He was banned from leaving France until the investigation is completed.

Telegram’s founder made his first public statement since his arrest the day before, promising to moderate content on the platform more – a marked change in tone after the company initially said he had “nothing to hide.”

“The dramatic increase in the number of Telegram users to 950 million has caused problems that have made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform,” he wrote in a statement. – “That is why I have set myself the goal of ensuring that the situation in this regard is significantly improved. We have already begun this process internally, and I will share more information about our progress with you soon.”

How to remove illegal content

Some of these changes seem to have already taken effect: the company’s FAQ page has changed in the last 24 hours. Take just one section titled “Telegram has illegal content. How to remove it?”.

As of September 5, Telegram’s response to this question was as follows: “All Telegram chats and group chats are private between their participants. We do not process any requests related to them.”

But these sentences have been replaced with the following: “All Telegram apps have ‘Report’ buttons that you can use to flag illegal content for our moderators – in just a few taps,” followed by instructions on how to report the messages.
