The European Commission wants greenhouse gas emissions cut in the European Union by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, according to plans to be presented on Tuesday. The reduction target is part of a draft text seen by dpa ahead of their official presentation in Strasbourg. The EU’s current goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 and to become climate neutral by 2050. There is currently no interim target for 2040.
