Once I could get from my house to France in an hour and a half. A half-hour’s walk to the Hoverport at Dover Westen Docks, arriving 30 minutes before the flight to check in and crossing the sea to Calais in another half hour. The Hoverspeed craft would land on the beach Plage Bleriot in Calais, just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre. It seemed right that those of us in Dover could take such a short, simple hop to the Continent when we could physically see it from the White Cliffs.
