Latvia will keep one of its two border crossings with neighbouring Belarus closed for the foreseeable future as a precautionary security measure, the Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday in Riga. The decision affects the Silene checkpoint, the ministry said. The other crossing point between Latvia, which is a member of both the European Union and NATO, and Belarus will remain open. The two countries share a 172 kilometres border. The closure was one of a number of measures taken in September to strengthen the security and surveillance of the border.
