Large parts of Germany’s long-distance and regional rail network came to a standstill on Thursday morning as train drivers began a 35-hour strike over pay. Deutsche Bahn, the state-owned national railway company, warned the strike would have “massive effects” on its operations, with only a fifth of long-distance trains in operation on Thursday and Friday.
