Estonia’s parliament approved a national budget on Friday which includes military spending in 2024 that will exceed the 3% threshold for the first time and amount to 3.2% of gross domestic product (GDP). The parliament in Tallin agreed the country will spend €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) on defence next year. Estonia, a NATO and European Union member nation which borders Russia, has a population of 1.2 million. The Baltic country sees a direct threat to its national security, due to the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine.
