Former rowing world champion and Olympic medallist Peter-Michael Kolbe of Germany has died at age 70, the German rowing federation (DRV) said on Saturday. The DRV said in a statement that Kolbe died in a nursing home in the northern German city of Lübeck on Friday after a grave illness, naming him “a legend of German sports.” Kolbe won five single sculls world titles for West Germany between 1975 and 1986 and was German Sportsman of the Year in 1975.
