A significant piece of a historic pier has been returned to its original seafront after being discovered in a salvage yard. The Victoria Pleasure Pier foundation stone was first placed on Folkestone’s seafront on May 7, 1887 during a ceremony led by the Viscountess Folkestone, ahead of the grand opening on July 21, 1888. The stone is Cornish “white” granite, and its durability meant it lasted much longer than the iron pier, which was destroyed by a fire in 1945 and eventually removed in 1954.
