Tokyo stocks extended gains in early afternoon trading Tuesday, with the benchmark Nikkei index rising more than 2 percent to a new intraday high, on buying of export-related issues after the yen weakened against the U.S. dollar. At 1 p.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 822.73 points, or 2.02 percent, from Monday to 41,603.43, well above the previous record intraday high of 41,112.24 set the previous day. The broader Topix index was up 28.82 points, or 1.01 percent, at 2,896.43.
