At the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, a personalized intelligence system integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It uses generative models and personal context to deliver intelligent features and capabilities across all Apple devices. Available for Apple’s A17 Pro, M1, M2, M3, and M4 chip-based devices, Apple Intelligence offers personalized artificial intelligence tools that help with everyday tasks like prioritizing notifications and managing email, while ensuring privacy through on-device data processing.
Apple Intelligence: All the key features
Writing tools in Apple Intelligence include options for multi-version rewrites, as well as proofreading and summarizing tools integrated into all apps. The Mail app benefits from Smart Reply suggestions and the ability to display priority emails at the top of inboxes. Image creation has been enhanced with Image Playground, which allows users to create images in thumbnail, illustration, and animation styles. Genmoji, artificially intelligent generative emojis based on profile photos, adds a fun mood, and the Cleanup tool helps remove unwanted people and objects from photos. The Memories feature allows users to create video stories by entering a description and selecting songs to go with them.
For audio and transcription, the Notes and Phone apps now allow users to record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When a phone call is being recorded, participants will receive a notification and a summary will be provided after the call is over. Siri has also undergone significant improvements with a new look and feel, improved context preservation, and the ability to enter questions. Siri can now understand more natural language, and over the next year, it will be able to control apps with on-screen prompts.
Integration with OpenAI makes ChatGPT available through Siri and system-wide texting tools. Apple assures users that their requests and information will not be logged, with the option to use ChatGPT’s premium features. Technical aspects of Apple Intelligence include Private Cloud Compute, which uses server models for complex queries without storing user data, and independent verification to ensure that privacy and security promises are kept.
While ChatGPT integration is expected later this year, it may not be available when iOS 18 first launches. Nevertheless, Apple Intelligence is a significant step forward in the field of personalized artificial intelligence, offering a seamless and secure experience across all Apple devices.
