Most folding phones on the market today fold inward, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. However, according to Apple analyst Jeff Pu, Apple may take a different approach with its first foldable iPhone.
Reportedly, the upcoming “iPhone Fold” (if Apple decides to call it that) will feature a 7.9-inch OLED display that folds outward, similar to the Huawei Mate Xs 2.
Huawei was one of the first companies to launch a folding phone with an innovative rotating display. However, the company has since changed the design of its current generation of folding phones to a book style with two displays – one on the cover and the other inside.
This change is likely due to concerns about screen durability, as the external display will not be protected when folded. This means that users will have to handle such devices with extra care.
However, the outward-folding design does have its advantages. Since this design requires only one large panel that can be used both folded and unfolded, it makes the device thinner and lighter, as there is no need to install a second display.
The outward-folding design also gives the phone a sleek look and allows you to use the main camera settings even for selfies, whether the device is folded or not.
Analyst Pu suggests that the “iPhone Fold” will hit the market in 2026, around the same time as the iPhone 18. In addition to the foldable iPhone, there are rumors of a MacBook with a foldable display. Reportedly, the device will have a 20.3-inch display and is rumored to be launched into mass production by the end of 2025. However, according to other reports, it won’t hit the market until 2027.
