Hundreds of garment workers erected barricades on a major Bangladeshi motorway for the third consecutive day and caused some factories to close on Monday to demand payment of overdue wages. Local police chief Sarwar Alam said owners had suspended operations at at least 12 factories adjacent to the troubled Basan area, some 30 kilometres north of the capital Dhaka. Nearly 2,000 factory workers started the demonstrations on Saturday to demand unpaid wages for the months of September and October, the officer said.
