Apple has just announced iOS 18 at WWDC24, which finally brings some artificial intelligence features and several other improvements. One of them is improved visuals. In the first developer preview of iOS 18, you’ll notice an improved animation when you press the power button or volume control. The use of the buttons shows a “squeeze effect” on the screen, which indicates the use of solid-state buttons in the future, possibly in the iPhone 16. The effect on the screen also adjusts according to the frequency of button presses.

In addition to the new animation, iOS 18 also adds the ability to turn off your phone from the Control Center without using the Power button. This is also an indication that the buttons are in for a change.

Earlier, there were rumors that the iPhone 15 lineup would feature solid-state buttons. However, due to some technical issues related to mass production, Apple decided to cancel its plan and use regular pressable buttons last year with the iPhone 15 Pro models. But changes in the operating system suggest that Apple has not canceled its plan completely.

It seems that with the new technology, Apple has decided to remove obstacles to mass production of iPhones, which may explain the introduction of updated visuals in the latest version of the OS.

Some relatively recent rumors also claim that the iPhone 16 lineup may finally get a buttonless design (with solid-state buttons). A report from the Economic Daily News claims that Apple is working with ASE Group (Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, a global semiconductor assembly and testing services provider) to produce a capacitive button packaging module for the iPhone 16 line. So we may indeed see capacitive buttons in the iPhone 16 lineup.

According to some reports, solid-state buttons may remain exclusive to iPhone 16 Pro models.

Apple might launch a new series in late Q3 or early Q4 of this year, so it’s only a few months away. Stay tuned and we will bring you more information as it becomes available.
