The Cybersecurity Innovations Hackathon brought together more than 200 participants – developers, energy industry experts, cybersecurity specialists, and startup representatives.
The main task was to find innovations to protect against dangerous cyber products and modernize cyber systems in the energy sector. Over eight days , 23 teams developed their own technologies to protect energy and business from cyber threats under the mentorship of top industry experts.
“Today, Ukraine is successfully fighting the world’s first cyber war. An effective defense system allows us not only to defend and counterattack, but also to build digital infrastructure. At the same time, we realize that cyber threats are evolving, becoming more complex and increasingly dangerous. That is why our goal is to invest even more in cyber resilience and constantly look for innovative solutions. Such events are an important part of this work,” said Oleksandr Borniakov, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine for IT Development.
Key areas of focus
From August 1 to 10, the teams, with the support of mentors, worked on solutions in three key areas:
- Advanced Cyber track – development of cybersecurity technologies based on artificial intelligence, machine learning, Big Data, etc.
- ICS Solutions track – development of solutions to protect and improve industrial process control systems in the energy sector.
- Secret Challenge – developing a real project for a customer from a Hackathon partner.
The winners
The winners of the Cybersecurity Innovations Hackathon are:
- A42 team with a solution based on ML and BigData to identify weaknesses of companies. The technology scans the Internet for vulnerabilities, data leaks, and phishing sites and detects more than 20 types of cyberattacks.
- CyberForce team, which presented a model of a secure 5G network based on artificial intelligence to monitor the state of critical infrastructure, including the energy sector.
- The Fix It team, which worked on the Secret Challenge and developed a “private” LTE network for first responders. The development allows to secure communication and completely replace walkie-talkies.
The winners will receive mentoring support from the USAID Cybersecurity of Ukraine’s Critical Infrastructure Project to apply for grant programs that will help improve the solutions they have developed, as well as a six-month residency in the first UNIT.City innovation park.
American support
“The United States of America is fully supporting Ukraine in winning the war and ensuring a prosperous future. An important part of this assistance is strengthening the country’s cybersecurity capabilities. After all, Ukraine’s resilience to cyberattacks is vital. That’s why the United States is proud to partner with Ukraine in promoting innovation to protect Ukraine in cyberspace,” said Theodora Dell, Deputy Mission Director for USAID Ukraine.
The Cybersecurity Innovations Hackathon was organized by the largest European IT competition DEV Challenge with the assistance of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and support from the USAID Cybersecurity of Ukraine’s Critical Infrastructure Project. The information partners of the Hackathon are Ukrainian Startup Fund and the first innovation park UNIT.City.
