Inefficient use of sports funding is the reason for Germany’s relatively poor performance in the medal tables for the Paris Olympics, according to a study by the Cologne-based German Economic Institute (IW) published on Tuesday. “German sports funding is inefficient and is missing its target of boosting top-class sport in a sustainable way,” IW economist Melinda Fremerey said.
