The company has developed what it claims is the first display capable of stretching by 50 percent. The screen can expand from 12 to 18 inches and can bend, twist, and stretch – essentially the Bop It of the tech world. In 2022, LG Display introduced another model that stretched from 12 to 14 inches – about 20 percent longer.
So how did they manage to increase the extension from 20 to 50 percent? According to the company, “By applying a number of new technologies, such as improving the properties of a special silicon substrate used in contact lenses and developing a new wiring design, LG Display has improved the panel’s extensibility and flexibility, exceeding the national project’s original goal of 20 percent elongation.”
The freeform screen technology, as LG Display calls it, features full red, green and blue colors with a resolution of 100ppi. The display also uses a micro-LED light source that is less than 40 micrometers in size, allowing the screen to be stretched more than 10,000 times. The company claims that it should still have high image quality even if it is subjected to external shocks or is in more extreme temperatures than usual.
Unfortunately, the stretchable display is currently only a prototype. However, in the future it could be used for flexible objects such as clothing, automotive panels, etc.
