Today, Sony has held a virtual presentation of its new Xperia smartphones, with the flagship Xperia 1 VI in the spotlight. The phone has a new processor, some camera improvements and a more traditional design.
Design and display
The Xperia 1 VI continues to follow Sony‘s minimalist design philosophy, offering a flat-edged body with a flat back. The rear panel also features a pill-shaped camera island reminiscent of its predecessor.
The biggest design change concerns the display, which now has a more familiar 19.5:9 aspect ratio, rather than the 21:9 aspect ratio found in movie theaters. This change has made the smartphone shorter and wider than its predecessor.
Sony also decided to ditch the 4K OLED display in favor of a 6.5-inch FHD+ panel (1080 x 2340 pixels). The phone still uses an OLED panel that has HDR certification, full DCI-P3 and X1 color gamut coverage for mobile devices. It offers a refresh rate of 1-120 Hz, a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz, and a motion blur reduction function of 240 Hz. The display, like the back panel, is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Despite the change in aspect ratio, the phone still has massive top and bottom bezels.
Productivity
Under the hood, the Xperia 1 VI is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with integrated Andreno 750 graphics. The processor is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage (a 512GB model will be available in Japan and East Asia). Sony also offers the option of expanding the memory up to 1.5 TB via microSD card. To protect against overheating, the phone has a cooling system with a steam chamber.
For audio, the device offers full-frontal stereo speakers that have improved bass, clarity, and sound spread over width and depth compared to its predecessor. It also has a 3.5mm jack for wired listening and supports technologies such as 360 Reality Audio, 360 Reality Audio hardware decoding, 360 Spatial Sound, Dolby Atmos, LDAC, DSEE Ultimate, Qualcomm aptX HD audio and LE Audio for a rich audio experience.
The rechargeable battery has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and supports 30W USB PD fast charging as well as Qi wireless charging. For connectivity, it has support for 5G, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 6E 802.11 ax, and Bluetooth 5.4 LE. For navigation, the phone supports GPS and GLONASS. In addition, it has a USB 3.2 Type-C port, NFC, and a side fingerprint sensor for security. It runs on Android 14 operating system, and Sony promises three Android version updates and four years of security support.
Cameras
Let’s move on to the main highlight of the phone – the main 48-megapixel camera with 1/1.3.5″ Exymor T sensor. This is the same sensor as in the flagship Xperia model of last year. It has an aperture of f/1.9 with support for hybrid OIS and EIS. The second camera on the back is a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle shooter with f/2.2 aperture and a focal length of 16 mm. The third and last camera on the rear panel is a telephoto camera with a 1/3.5″ sensor and an improved 85mm-170mm optical zoom lens that provides an optical zoom of 3.5x to 7.1x (21.3x hybrid zoom). All rear cameras are equipped with ZEISS lenses with T* coating.
The front camera is equipped with a 12-megapixel 1/2.9″ Exmor RS mobile sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 84° viewing angle. The Xperia 1 VI camera system is capable of recording video with a resolution of up to 4K 120 frames per second. Sony has also updated the camera app on Xperia 1 VI to make it more accessible and convenient for users who take photos and videos. For users who prefer to customize the camera settings to their liking, the Pro mode remains.
Price and availability
The Xperia 1 VI will start at €1,399/£1,299 and will be available in early June. It is available in black, platinum silver and green colors.
