The amount of debt owed by each council can be revealed today with residents facing an ‘extreme and long-lasting’ impact on services, it has been warned. The high levels of local authority debt paints a grim picture, showing UK councils owe a combined £97.8bn to lenders, equivalent to £1,141 per resident, as of September 2023.
