Women fleeing domestic violence in their home country could be granted refugee status in the European Union, a top EU court ruled on Tuesday in Luxembourg. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) said in a statement that women may qualify for refugee status in cases where, in their country of origin, they are exposed “on account of their gender, to physical or mental violence, including sexual violence and domestic violence.” The case relates to a divorced Kurdish woman from Turkey.
