More than a quarter have taken out a loan to finance this year’s festivities, according to a poll by the Financial Conduct Authority. Lending amounts have soared by over a third in the past 12 months – from £305 to £412. And the number of people applying for debt support has rocketed by 83%. Over half admitted feeling anxious about being able to afford the necessities. Their plight comes as 1.8 million are relying on loan sharks to keep above water.
