The deceased head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Neophyte, was buried on Saturday after a funeral procession in Sofia. Prior to this, the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, presided over a funeral Mass in the Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the centre of the capital. The ecumenical patriarch is regarded as the representative and spiritual leader of the Eastern Orthodox Christians worldwide. Neophyte died on March 13 after a long illness at the age of 78.
